Do you see a man skilled in his work?                                            He will serve before kings:                                            he will not serve before obscure men. ~ Proverbs 22:29 (NIV) As we come to the close of the year, it is prudent that each one of us takes stock of what we have accomplished throughout 2015 viz a viz the goa...

Is It True President Obama Didn’t Deserve The 2009 Nobel Peace Prize?

Image
Just like anyone else, a few weeks ago I read about The Nobel Committee’s ‘regret’ in selecting President Barrack Obama as the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 with very little emotion. The award, you could quietly tell, was as a result of the Obamamania wave sweeping across the world before and after his election in 2008. Everyone wanted a piece of him for themselves and the Nobel Peace Prize Committee was not to be left behind.Heck!Even Kenya couldn’t hold herself together and had to have a public holiday in his honour! Details of the decision making moment having revolved around a Norwegian Beer festival probably helped the committee let their hair down , according to Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. That everyone was ‘’legless drunk ’’ as they listened to Obama’s Cairo speech repeatedly with the realization that America would now be led by a black man, probably elicited the Schadenfreude phenomenon persuading them in their inebriat...

Pope Francis Should Offer A Public Apology To Emmanuel Shikuku

Pope Francis arriving at JKIA in Nairobi on Nov 25, 2015 It is characteristic of us as Africans not to wash our dirty linen in public. It is also considered a mark of maturity and responsibility to ‘cover each other’s nakedness’ especially whenever an important guest visits our homes. This implies that the host should maintain an aura of warmth, love and generosity in both word and deed, in spite of any acrimony pre-existing amongst his family members,in order to keep the visitor feeling at home and entertained for the duration of the visit. Pope Francis detests any form of white-washing, going by the acts of humility and selflessness he has already demonstrated in the two days he has been here in Kenya. His impact will not be forgotten in decades to come as can be observed by his effortless ability to unite us as a nation despite our religious, racial, political, tribal, and social inclinations- something that our leaders have so far miserably failed. For the ...

The Hate U Give Little Infants Fails Everyone

Image
For the uninitiated, T.H.U.G  L.I.F.E  is the acronym. Coined by the virtuoso rapper Tupac Shakur, and made famous by his first rap group and their only studio album so aptly named in the early 90’s, the phrase was in reference to the plight of the young African- American struggling to find his place in society. Considered too controversial at the time, the album itself went on to become one of the most realistic and hard-hitting social commentaries rap genre has produced to date. Of course Tupac didn’t end his role as society’s mirror there, as can be attested by his subsequent releases to date. With the majority of the black men then being systematically dis-empowered or in prison or dead from gang violence, women were often left alone take care of the family.  Cases of pregnant women hooked on hard drugs, mothers neglecting their infants, girls with special needs being sexually violated, teen mothers selling their bodies in front of thei...
